Overcoming Legal and Cultural Challenges

The journey toward building a crematorium in Cyprus was complex. For many years, cremation was a sensitive topic, often viewed through religious and cultural lenses that favoured traditional burials. Additionally, Cyprus’s legal framework did not previously accommodate cremation facilities.

Following consistent advocacy, public consultations, and engagement with lawmakers and religious authorities, legislation was passed in 2016, allowing for cremation. This pivotal shift in Cypriot funeral law reflected a broader recognition of individual rights and freedom of choice in death care.
